Fresh water utility

It is essential to have fresh water on the site for livestock, but also for health and safety. Fresh water outlets are constructed where workers wash their hands. A double outlet is attached to the fresh water valve so a hose could also be attached.

If pigs are raised it is necessary to construct fresh water outlets in the piggery. Continuous fresh water supply in the piggery is essential and can be provided by suckers installed in each compartment of the piggery. To guarantee fresh water supply for the livestock during water shortages, a storage tank needs to be installed between the fresh water outlet and the piggery. The volume of these interim storage tanks should be sufficient to provide fresh water for 4-5 days. For other uses of fresh water during temporary water shortages, it is important to have a water cistern as a rainwater collection barrel on the roof of one of the structures.

Storage/ equipment and office building

A structure is needed for storing equipment and managing the site. This consists of two rooms - an equipment room and an office, each of the same dimensions - 3 x 5 meters. Fresh water outlets should be installed in each room.

Accommodation/security building

The operator should live near the site for security and management reasons. However, for living comfort and also legal requirements, this structure is located at the clean-water end of the facility, at least 200 meters from the oxygenation ponds, and also fenced. The accommodation building is constructed before anything else if no accommodation is available within 100 meters of the site. At minimum it is for one family to permanently occupy the site. An outdoor fresh water outlet is required for the operators to wash their hands. The windows of the building should look out onto the site and especially the livestock area for security reasons.

Electrical utilities  - the site should be electrified at:

  • equipment/office building
  • accommodation building
  • central lighting pole to light the site at night
  • pump house if one is used

Pathways

Entrances and pathways of stone or rock are constructed for all structures with cleaning areas at the door to reduce tracking mud into structures during construction. Main pathways are required also for construction and maintenance machinery.

Fence - the site requires fencing at:

  • Facility perimeter to keep out large animals, serve as a security warning to residents, and protect children.
  • Each pond to keep ducks.
  • Around the operator house.

Sequence of construction:

A detailed construction sequence is in the Workplan. Generally this is the sequence of construction although several steps proceed parallely:

  • wastewater inlet and new collection system if required
  • fence and accommodation for security
  • electricity and fresh water on site
  • move topsoil to garden area
  • level land to desired slope
  • take ponds and structures
  • biodigester excavation and construction
  • sand tank excavation
  • oxygenation tank excavation
  • fish ponds excavation
  • macrophyte ponds excavation and gate construction
  • concurrent with macrophyte ponds and settlement pond, structures for office, storage, accommodation and livestock are constructed.
